frottage study

Text: "Fromage is "automatic". what stands out to me is how this method, unlike any other allows the rapid and accurate recreation of a texture or shape. As seen below, the precisely machined lines of various objects can be copied directly onto paper. Unlike with a photograph physical media is capturing the essence of an object. The sharp protrusions of a mixer board, the indents of an amplifier. Those lines are accurately recreated and are then open to further interpretation and manipulation.

Text: "Indexicality appears to be primarily a linguistic concept. Essentially, word and other audible forms of communication sort of implicitly reference something, or at least certain words and sounds are prescribed a meaning outside of their own objective existence. This is similar to symbolism as they both exist together as "fundamental sign modalities". Symbols seem to be visual ways of expressing a meaning, where as indices is connected to language itself. The connection to the visual arts with symbolism is obvious, and frottage is an effective method to translate symbols onto the page, but the connection to indexicality is less obvious. I think one way could be to use frottage to illustrate an idea that is too abstract to be broken down into a basic symbol. We use words to reference complicated subjects ad art can do the same."
" What i notice about indices is how, like symbols they can be unique to individual languages, cultures or groups."
"The shape of a guitar pick created by frottage can be considered a symbol of music or expression Symbols can be universally or individually relevant."
